FAQ
Changing the registration is mandatory in Spain. You can take out motorcycle insurance in Spain for a vehicle with foreign plates, but only for a maximum of three months. In order to register a vehicle in Spain, you may either call a business agent (see our list of useful contacts) or contact the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic). The cost of changing registration plates will depend on the horsepower and model of your vehicle. You will need various documents: a certificate of conformity, proof of having passed a technical inspection, passport, grey card and the invoice for the purchase including any taxes payable.
In the event of an accident, you must first make sure everyone is safe. Then, call us as quickly as possible or contact the insurance company. We then take care of everything. Our priority will be to send you a towing vehicle and get you back home. Right after that, we will declare the accident with your insurance company, processing your motorcycle insurance in Spain with the necessary documents you provide us with in order to obtain a reimbursement, if necessary, from the insured parties. To declare an accident, call: +34932688742 or find out more about how accidents are handled here
When driving, you must not only have the contract available but also proof of payment (what is known in Spanish as the “recibo”) showing you are current on your insurance premium. The insurance company will issue a green card for travel outside Spain. It is renewed each year at your request.
Information
Whether for theft, accidents or breakdowns, your vehicles needs to be insured. The purpose of motorcycle insurance is to cover the driver’s civil liability as well as material losses in the event of an accident. Just as in France, insuring your vehicle with “third party” cover at minimum is mandatory. You may add other guarantees which cover the insured vehicle.
The amount of your premium as well as the insurance company’s decisions are influenced by several items:
- Age
- Years licenced
- The vehicle
- Use of the vehicle
- Place of residence
- Desired guarantees
- The number and frequency of prior claims
In Spain, insuring your motorcycle with at least “third party” insurance is mandatory. A motorcycle with French registration plates may only be insured for a maximum of 3 months. So, you need to think about changing those plates! Exchanging your license is mandatory if you plan to live in Spain more than 6 months.
Anyone over 25 who has held a licence for more than two years may drive your vehicle occasionally and be covered by your insurance without having to be declared on your insurance policy.
